City Of Educated People

Title was supposed to sound like the movie "City Of God" but wasn't very successful.
Bad jokes aside this article is about cities which have seen largest increase in salaries (mostly of highly skilled people) in past three years. The list was really surprising because the top city was not New York or LA but EL PASO in Texas
.

Picture: Downtown El Paso, Texas

The reason given in the article (Link given in the end) was the increase in the requirements for border patrol (Thanks to illegal immigrants!!) which in turn requires more people for jobs in intelligence and other white collar jobs. Another reason given was exapansion in local military base (Fort Bliss) and University (University Of Texas) which created even more jobs coupled with relative protection from battered housing economy maximum salary increase in this almost unknown town of EL Paso in Texas. The top 5 cities in US where maximum increase was seen in the period of 2006-2009 are as follows:

City, State, Median Salary (2009)
1. El Paso, Texas, US$49,100
2. Bakersfield, CA, US$60,900
3. Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE-Iowa, US$53,900
4. Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-North Carolina, US$52,200
5. Des Moines-West Des Moines, Iowa, US$52,500

The comple list can be accessed here with median pay, increase in median pay and also unemployment rate.

The point to be noted here that these cities are the places where maximum increase was noted and does not nessessarily mean that these places have highest salaries in USA. For example in El Paso (numero Uno in the list!) the median pay was US$49,100 which is less than any of the top 10 cities in this list of maximum increase in salaries.
Another point to be noted is that these salaries are indicative more of local economy of the place rather than of the whole state or country. For instance Charlotte, North Carolina which was number 9 in the list made it to the top ten because of its thriving Education industry (The place has half a dozen universities.). Although eucation industry is one of the few industries which have seen increase in salaries and employement in these hard economic times.
Coming back to the title of this blog; the salaries are mostly for college grads i.e people with skills and dgrees like engineering.
The whole report and analysis is availbale at this forbes.com article.
Finally, Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to All.
