Locomotive Engineer Salaries

I read this article about jobs and industries which are safer in this economy and Locomotive Engineering (Railroads), is one of them. Locomotive Engineers operate large trains carrying cargo or passengers between stations. Most engineers run diesel-electric locomotives, although a few operate locomotives powered by battery or externally supplied electricity. Before each run, engineers check the mechanical condition of their locomotives, making any minor adjustments necessary and documenting issues that require more thorough inspection. While trains are in motion, engineers move controls such as throttles and air brakes. They also monitor instruments that measure speed, amperage, battery charge, and air pressure, both in the brake lines and in the main reservoir. Engineers must have thorough knowledge of their routes and must be constantly aware of the condition and makeup of their train, because trains react differently to the grade and condition of the rail, the number of cars, the ratio of empty cars to loaded cars, and the amount of slack in the train. Now that you know what a locomotive engineer actually does, its time for their salaries.
Below are the median salaries for locomotive engineer in major cities of US.
City, State                         Salary
New York, NY              US$ 76,000
Boston, MA                   US$72,000
Los Angeles, CA          US$70,000
Newark, NJ                   US$75,000
Columbus, OH             US$64,000
Again the pay one gets depends on skill level i.e. experince & size of industry and can go upto as high as US$100,000. As the cost of shipping by truck has risen; in railroads — the watchword is "hired," not "fired.
