The average offer for an Engineering graduate this year was US$ 56,419, up by 3.5 percent from last year. That’s much higher than the $49,427 average for civil engineers, but modest compared with the chemical engineers’ $63,749, buoyed by the soaring fortunes of the petroleum-products sector. “What’s driving salaries in those industries can arguably be summed up in one word: energy,” says Tim McCreight, marketing manager at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
The demand for electrical engineers is rising because US is producing less and less Electrical Engineers. reason: Read here. Engineers with analog, RF, and wireless skills, as well as those with postgraduate training, are becoming harder and harder to find.
Diverting away from the profession of engineering a little bit,(much needed change i guess!!!) i came across another interesting article which says that wages in new york are 30 percent higher!!(WOW).
source: http://www.worldexecutive.com/
Based on May 2007 data, chief executives earn an average of $93.37 an hour, surgeons make $89.78 per hour and orthodontists rake in $87.09 per hour, driving salaries in the area to an average of $25.38 per hour. The three mentioned occupations are the top three hourly occupations in the area. The highest wage differential came in the construction and extraction group, which at $27.91 an hour was nearly 43% above the national average.
The study tracked more than 700 jobs ranging from automotive technicians ($18.68 an hour) to zoologists ($19.82 an hour). In case you were wondering, nuclear engineers earn $46.83 an hour. The lowest earning workers were those in the field of food preparation and serving earning US$ 11.95 per hour. Although this was still higher than national average of US$9.35.
The above comparison was between New york and US national average. If you compare New york average with another big city like San Francisco or Chicago or Boston, the difference wont be this much.
